The difference between gel stains and traditional stains
Gel stains are used to stain wood, but—unlike traditional stains that soak readily into the wood—gel stains have an oil base and stay more on the surface of the wood, like paint.
Why you may want to use a gel stain (and one of our favorite brands)
General Finishes offers a range of stains and top coats, including a gel stain that works wonderfully.
It comes in a variety of colors and applies just like regular wood stain—you simply brush or wipe it on your wood surface. The gel-like consistency can often make for a smoother application than other stains; plus, it won’t run as easily, which is great when staining a vertical surface.
This product is only meant to be used in interiors; however, it works on both bare wood and on a previously stained surface. When used on a stained surface, it will enhance or change the color.
Another advantage of gel stain is that, due to its high urethane content, it’s very durable, and you may not need to apply a protective top coat.
It’s easy to use and may even save you time—that’s a win in our book.
